Mood stabilizer - A mood stabilizer is a psychiatric medication used in the treatment mood disorders characterised by rapid and unstable mood shifts. These disorders include bipolar disorder, where they suppress swings between mania and depression, and borderline personality disorder.
Lithium salt - Lithium salts are chemical salts of lithium used as mood stabilizing drugs (Eskalith® Lithobid® Camcolit®), primarily in the treatment of bipolar disorder, depression, and mania; but also in treating schizophrenia. Usually lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), but sometimes the citrate salt, lithium citrate (Li3C6H5O7), the sulfate salt, lithium sulfate (Li2SO4), or the oxybutyrate salt, lithium oxybutyrate, is used.
Carbamazepine - Carbamazepine (Biston®; Calepsin®; Carbatrol®; Epitol®; Finlepsin®; Sirtal®; Stazepine®; Tegretol®; Telesmin®; Timonil®; Equetro®) is an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizing drug, used primarily in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder; but also used to treat schizophrenia and trigeminal neuralgia.
John Cade - Dr John Frederick Joseph Cade AO (January 18 1912-November 16 1980) was an Australian psychiatrist credited with discovering (in 1948) the effects of lithium carbonate as a mood stabilizer in the treatment of Bipolar Disorder (then known as Manic Depression). In an age where the standard treatments for psychosis were electroconvulsive therapy and "lobotomy", Lithium had the distinction of being the first effective medication available to treat a mental illness.
